SPELLING STUDY
अंग्रेजी भाषा में Spellings का बड़ा महत्त्व है। Spellings ध्यानपूर्वक याद रखना चाहिए। Spellings बनाने का कोई विशेष नियम ऐसा नहीं है जो प्रत्येक दशा में सदैव लागू हो जाये। फिर भी विद्यार्थियों की सुविधा के लिए कुछ नियम नीचे दिये जाते हैं। विद्यार्थी इन्हें ध्यानपूर्वक पढ़े और याद करेंअंग्रेजी भाषा में A, E, I, O, U स्वर (Vowels) कहलाते हैं और बाकी सभी. अक्षर व्यंजन (Consonants) होते हैं।
(B) Rules for Spellings

नियम
1. के साथ सदैव ॥ होता है, जैसे
queen, quarrel, quite, quiet, quick, question, quality, qualified, quench, etc.
2. यदि किसी शब्द के बाद ‘full’ जोड़ा जाये, तो full का एक ‘I’ कम हो जाता है, जैसे
faith+full = faithful; | help+full = helpful; cheer+full = cheerful; fear+full = fearful; harm+full = harmful.
3. यदि उन शब्दों के बाद, जिनके अन्त में ‘II’ हो, कुछ जोड़ा जाये, तो केवल एक ‘I’ रह जाता है, जैसे
well+come = welcome; well+fare = welfare; skill+full = skilful; all+most = almost; all+ready = already; will+full = wilful. अपवाद: well+being=well-being
4.यदि well या will किसी शब्द के अन्त में जोड़ा जाये, तो एक ‘I’ कम नहीं होगा, जैसे
fare+well = farewell; un+well = unwell; good+will = goodwill.
5. यदि किसी शब्द के अन्त में ‘ee’ है, तो उसमें ing या dom बढ़ाते समय कोई परिवर्तन नहीं होता, जैसे
agree+ing = agreeing; free+dom = freedom; see+ing = seeing.
6. क्रिया के अन्त में -ing जोड़ने पर कभी-कभी परिवर्तन नहीं होता, जैसे
sleep+ing = sleeping; weep+ing = weeping; kill+ing =killing.
7. यदि Verb के अन्त में -ie हो, तो -ing बढ़ाते समय -ie का –y हो जाता है, जैसे
die=ing=dying; lie+ing= lying.
8. यदि Verb के अन्तिम अक्षर (w, r,y को छोड़कर) के पहले स्वर हो, तो ing बढ़ाते समय अन्तिम अक्षर दो बार लिखा जाता है, जैसे
run+ing=running; worship+ing= Worshipping; put+ing=putting; cut+ing = cutting, set+ing = setting; beg+ing=begging.
अपवाद : pardon+ing=pardoning; iron+ing=ironing; open+ing=opening; burn+ing=burming.
9. जिन Verbs के अन्त में w, r, या y हो तथा उनसे पूर्व स्वर (vowel) हो, तो -ing बढ़ाते समय अन्तिम अक्षर को double नहीं लिखते, जैसे
blow+ing=blowing; draw+ing=drawing; grow+ing= growing; answer+ing= answering; order+ing=ordering; buy+ing=buying; fly+ing=flying;
copy+ing= copying; play+ing =playing; say+ing = Saying.
10. यदि संज्ञा (Noun) के अन्त में –y से पहले स्वर (vowel) हो, तो plural बनाते समय कोई परिवर्तन नहीं होता; केवल अन्त में -s बढ़ा दिया जाता है,जैसे day से days; boy से boys, toy से toys; key से keys,monkey monkeys, etc.
11. यदि किसी संज्ञा के अन्त में -y हो और इससे पूर्व व्यंजन (consonant) हो, तो plural बनाते समय –y को -ies में बदल देते हैं, जैसे
lady से ladies; baby से babies; body से bodies, duty से duties, city से cities; army armies, fly flies; story से stories, etc.
12. यदि किसी शब्द के अन्त में -y हो, तो उस शब्द के अन्त में full जोड़ते समय -y को -i में बदल देते हैं, जैसे
duty+full = dutiful; beauty+full = beautiful. (नियम 2 भी देखो)
13. जिन संज्ञाओं के अन्त में –f या -fe हो, तो उनकी plural बनाते समय इनको –ves में बदल देते हैं, जैसे
leaf से leaves, thief से thieves; knife से knives; wife से wives; calf से calves, etc.
अपवाद : chief से chiefs; gulf से gulfs, safe से safes.
14. जिन संज्ञाओं के अन्त में –f हो और इससे पूर्व -00 हो, तो plural बनाते समय केवल –s बढ़ा देते हैं, जैसे
proof से proofs; roof से roofs, hoof से hoofs.
15. यदि संज्ञा के अन्त में -0 है और इससे पहले व्यंजन (consonant) है, तो बहुवचन बनाते समय —es बढ़ा देते हैं, जैसे
mango से mangoes, hero से heroes, etc.
16. यदि किसी शब्द में -i और —e मिलकर -ee (ई) की आवाज दे, तो -i पहले आयेगा तथा –e बाद में, जैसे
believe; yield; relieve, niece. अपवाद-seize.
17. यदि नियम 16 के अन्तर्गत ‘ई’ की आवाज से पूर्व – हो, तो —e पहले आयेगा और — बाद में, जैसे
conceive; deceive, receive, perceive.
18. यदि किसी शब्द के अन्त में -ate हो, तो उससे संज्ञा बनाते समय -e को -ion में बदल देते हैं, जैसे
translate से translation; educate से education, dictate dictation vacate से vacation; manipulate manipulation;
hesitate से hesitation; legislate से legislation; narrate से narration; calculate से calculation; relate से relation.
