About the Poetess : Toru. Dutt was born in Calcutta in 1856 in a respectable Bengali Christian Family. She received her education in Europe. She was a poetic genius and was interested in the songs and legends of India. She died in 1877 when she was only 21 years old. Even a brief span of her life made her immortal.

About the Poem : In this poem Toru Dutt describes her intense love for nature. Here we find a beautiful description of nature and her love for Casuarina tree. This tree reminds her of her old friends and their company.

Central Idea
In this poem the poetess Toru Dutt has described the beautiful tall Casuarina tree. It has become very dear to her because she passed her early childhood with her playmates under the shade of this tree. She appreciates the various sights and sounds of nature. She feels that the tree also shares with the poetess, the sense of grief of the loss of dear old ones. Thus by making the tree responsive, she has made the poem intensely human.

EXPLANATIONS (With Meanings & Hindi Translation)

1. Like a huge Python, winding round and round
The rugged trunk, indented deep with scars
Up to its very summit near the stars,
A creeper climbs, in whose embraces bound
No other tree could live. But gallantly
The giant wears the scarf, and flowers are hung
In crimson clusters all the boughs among,
Whereon all day are gathered bird and bee;
And oft at night the garden overflows
With one sweet song that seems to have no close,
Sung darkling from our tree, while men repose.

[ Word-meanings : huge = बड़ा very big; python = अजगर a large snake; winding = लिपटा हुआ
embracing; rugged = खुरदरा, भद्दा rough; trunk = तना; indented deep with scars = छाल में गहरे निशान बन जाना marks like wounds in the bark of the tree; summit = चोटी top; creeper = बेल; gallantly = बहादुरी से bravely; giant= विशाल very large; crimson = गहरा लाल deep red; clusters = गुच्छे bunches; boughs = शाखाएँ branches; oft = बहुधा often; over flows = अधिक भर जाना filled up to the brim; repose = आराम करते हैं take rest.]

Reference : This stanza has been taken from the poem Our Casuarina Tree composed by Toru Dutt.
[ N.B.: The above reference will be used for all the explanations of this poem. ]

Context: In these lines the poetess expresses her intense love for nature. Mainly she describes the Casuarina tree. She loves this tree more because she has played with her companions beneath it. The sweet memories of the past are associated with the tree.

Explanation: In this opening stanza the poetess describes the Casuarina tree in detail. It is so tall that it touches the sky. It is very strong also. A creeper has embraced it on all sides so tightly that there are many marks like wounds. Other tree could not have lived so long in so tight embrace. The sweet chirping song of the birds and melodious music and humming of bees give joy to the poetess. This song comes from the tree even in the dark while people are taking rest in the night.

2. When first my casement is wide open thrown
At dawn, my eyes delighted on it rest:
Sometimes, and most in winter, on its – crest
A grey baboon sits statue-like alone
Watching the sunrise; while on lower boughs
His puny offspring leap about and play;
And far and near Kokilas hail the day;
And to their pastures wend our sleepy cows;
And in the shadow, on the broad tent cast
By that hoary tree, so beautiful and vast,
The water-lilies spring, like snow enmassed.

[Word-meanings : casement = खिड़की window; wide open thrown = पूरी खुली हुई opened fulls; dawn = प्रातःकाल early in the morning; eyes rest on it = नजर टिक जाती है; crest = चोटी top; grey baboon = कुत्ते के चेहरे वाला बन्दर a big monkey with a dog like face; statue = प्रतिमा image;
puny = छोटा small; offsprings = बच्चे young ones; leap about = उछलते-कूदते हैं jump; kokilas = कोयल cuckoo; hail = स्वागत करती है welcome; pastures = चरागाह meadows; wend = घूमती है wander; sleepy = आलस्य से भरी lazy as if in sleep; cast = ढाल दिया गया, बना दिया गया shaped; hoary = बहुत पुराना very old; spring = प्रकट होती है appear; snow enmassed = बर्फ के ढेर के समान like the heap of snow.]

Context: In these lines the poetess expresses her intense love for nature. Mainly she describes the Casuarina tree. She loves this tree more because she has played with her companions beneath it. The sweet memories of the past are associated with the tree.

Explanation: In this stanza the poetess describes the morning scene which she enjoys from her open window. She looks at the tree which looks very beautiful specially in winter. She looks at the grey baboon sitting on the tree and looking at the sunrise. His youngones are jumping from one branch to another. The music of the koel seems to be welcoming the day. The shadow of the tree looks as if there were a tent and in its shadow. The water lilies look so beautiful that it looks like a heap of snow.

3. But not because of its magnificence
Dear is the Casuarina to my soul;
Beneath it we have played; through years may roll,
O sweet companions, loved with love intense,
For your sakes shall the tree be ever dear !
Blent with your images, it shall arise
In memory, till the hot tears blind mine eyes !

[ Word-meanings: magnificence = सुन्दरता grandeur, beauty; roll = बीतना pass; intense = बहुत अधिक very much; blent = मिला हुआ mixed, mingled.]

Context: The poetess is watching the Casuarina tree from her window which looks very beautiful.

Explanation: The poetess says that the Casuarina tree is very dear to her not because it is splendid but because it reminds her of those happy days when she used to play under the tree with her friends. The poetess says that the tree will always remain dear to her as it is associated with her friends whom she loves extremely. The poetess hopes that the tree will ever grow in memory of her friends but she will shed tears as she misses them all.

4. What is that dirge-like murmur that I hear
Like the sea breaking on a shingle beach ?
It is the tree’s lament, an eerie speech,
That haply to the unknown land may reach.

[Word-meanings : dirge = दाह-संस्कार के समय गाया जाने वाला गीत a song sung at the time of
funeral; murmur = गुनगुनाहट low sound which is not very clear; shingle = समुद्र के किनारे पड़े हुए छोटे गोल पत्थर small rounded pebble on the sea-shore; lament = विलाप expression of grief; eerie = अद्भुत, भयानक strange, fearful; haply = शायद perhaps, by chance.]

Context: The poetess describes her intense love for nature. In the morning from her · open window she looks at the tree which looks very beautiful. She looks at the grey baboon sitting on the tree and looking at the sunrise. So she is reminded of her old friends and becomes sad.

Explanation: The poetess says that she does not love this tree due to its beauty. But she has very old attachment with it. She has played in its shadow with her friends. This tree reminds her of the love which she had for those friends. She is filled with feelings of love. In the mean time she hears a low lamentation. This sound is similar to the sound of sea water striking against the pebbles. She feels that it is the expression of grief from the tree. It fills her with fear. But she hopes that soon it will reach an unknown land.

Comments: The poetess has filled this stanza by the use of different figures of speech,
e.g. Apostrophe, Personification and Simile.
